What Causes Brow Drooping?

Brow drooping, also called brow ptosis, is the descent of the eyebrow from its normal position. When an eyebrow droops, it can cause functional issues, cosmetic concerns, or visual impairment. Sagging skin can result from muscle weakness or a condition that affects facial features. Drooping brows and eyelids can cause vision loss, which may require surgery. If a patient needs surgery, doctors may remove excess skin, fat, and muscle. Known as blepharoplasty, this procedure reshapes the upper or lower eyelids to prevent drooping.

When brows droop, doctors may recommend a brow lift or other nonsurgical approaches. Those who receive a brow lift can expect excess skin to tighten, relieving pressure on the eye and other features.

Consider a Brow Lift

A brow lift is a surgery that restores the natural position of the eyebrows. This type of procedure prevents the brow from drooping, maintaining the original expression. There are several different types of brow lift surgeries. For instance, an endoscopic brow lift uses small hairline incisions to carefully release the forehead and frontal scalp tissues. The surgeon then elevates and balances the brows.

A temporal brow lift focuses on elevating the outer portion of the brows and uses endoscopic visualization to reposition tissue precisely, ensuring natural-looking results. A direct brow lift is performed with incisions made along the outer brow hairline. Although scarring may be more visible, this procedure provides powerful, precise brow elevation. A chemical brow lift, often known as a Botox brow lift, is a nonsurgical treatment that uses a neurotoxin injected around the outer brow to relax muscles.

Causes of Brow Ptosis

Excessive sun exposure, gravity, and the natural degeneration of skin and underlying tissues are the main contributors to brow ptosis. In addition to this, there are a variety of other causes of brow ptosis, including:

  • Age: The most common form of brow ptosis, which increases connective tissue and skin laxity and leads to drooping of the eyebrow.
  • Trauma: If an individual receives damage to facial nerves, brow ptosis can occur.
Infection – Ramsay Hunt syndrome is a reactivation of the varicella-zoster virus that can cause facial paralysis and a rash near the ear canal, scalp, and mucous membranes. Other infections that can lead to drooping include Lyme disease, West Nile virus, syphilis, and human immunodeficiency virus (HIV).
  • Myopathy: Certain medical conditions can cause brow drooping, including facial conditions such as myasthenia gravis or myotonic dystrophy.
  • Spasms: Congenital spasms and acquired spasms can pull the brow down and away from the anatomically correct position. A blepharospasm or hemifacial spasm can lead to brow ptosis.
  • Neoplasms: When neoplasms affect the facial nerve, function may decrease, and brow ptosis can occur. Health conditions that can lead to brow drooping include skin cancers such as melanoma and squamous cell carcinoma.

These causes of brow ptosis vary in severity. However, those who seek help from a professional can explore treatment options.

What to Expect During Brow Lift Surgery

A brow lift procedure is precise and carefully performed, typically taking about 1-3 hours, depending on the technique the professional uses. You should also expect the following with a brow lift procedure:

  • General anesthesia is used for endoscopic and temporal brow lifts.
  • Direct brow lifts require local anesthesia and are performed in-office.
  • Recovery requires patients to wear a temporary head wrap for the first 24 hours after surgery.
  • Patients may notice improvements 1-2 weeks after the surgery.

If you suffer from brow drooping, consider a brow lift.
